The Philippines is one of the countries that suffer most from the effects of climate change. Due to the negative issues in the environment, which have either happened or gradually
developed over a period of time, many people in the Philippines have been affected. This does not only happen in the households or the communities but their economic activities and health as well. These changes in the environment, especially the ones that have taken place within a period of time can be attributed to the activities of man. This includes practices such as deforestation, pollution, over employment of the natural resources. For instance, farming andconstruction activities that involve clearing trees increases the floods because the soil cannot hold much water. Pollution as a result of industries and automobiles, for example, global warming effects, encourages water levels to rise and creates stronger typhoons. These problems complicate the process of rehabilitation after calamities for households.
Yet in the face of these problems, the people of the Philippines have kept amazing courage. People do not return to their normal lives but come together to mend everything after disasters, and many parents work out possibilities for their children within the altered circumstances. Initiatives such as disaster response training, reforestation and improving agricultural practices also contributed. However, these approaches require integration in one system if we want to build sustainable solutions, they should demand increased collective effort. There is need for the government, businesses and individuals to join hands in behaving in a way that minimizes damaging activities to the environment.
Last but not least, entering the climate change debate with solutions that tackle the issue beyond the crisis, and highlight sustainability practices, will in the end help the Philippines create a society that will not only adapt but will flourish in balance with the environment. Everyone, let us bear in mind our duty to conserve the environment not just for today but for the next generations.
